Community Conversations
As home of the US Navy’s 7 fleet, this strategic seaport on Tokyo Bay is the wellspring of US-Japan relations. From this vantage point, the Yokosuka Council on Asia-Pacific Studies (YCAPS) is hosting four virtual events in early March 2022 to guide us the through the history and current roles of primary US military bases in Japan.
2 March — Sasebo
3 March — Yokota
7 March — Yokosuka
8 March — Okinawa
All discussions are held in personal capacity of the participants and, unless specifically noted otherwise, all activities are off-the-record in nature. Comments made by members are non-attributable and made in the spirit of education and conceptual exchange. No comments or discussions presented during YCAPS meetings reflect any official government policy.
The Yokosuka Council on Asia-Pacific Studies (YCAPS) promotes the study of strategic, diplomatic, and legal issues affecting the Asia-Pacific Region. It is a non-profit organization building connections and developing people in the Yokosuka Community.

YCAPS-SPF Community Conversation - Yokota (via Zoom) 3 March 2022 - 20:00-21:15 (Japan)
YCAPS & the Sasakawa Peace Foundation are pleased to launch the Community Conversations seminar series in Fussa. The inaugural event will feature Dr. Michael Bosack discussing how Yokota Air Base, originally an Imperial Japanese Army facility, emerged as the hub for the US-Japan security relationship. He will explain how the base has reflected the evolution of the broader U.S.-Japan alliance while offering a foundational understanding of the strategically meaningful work being done by American, Japanese, and multinational personnel at Yokota today.

Tetsuo Kotani discussing the strategically important decision to forward-deploy the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Midway to Yokosuka, the significance of upgrading that to a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, and the conversion of JS Izumo into a vessel capable of operating F-35B fighters.
