Shigeru Iwasaki, born on February 3rd, 1953, built a distinguished career defined by service, leadership, and strategic influence within Japan’s national defense community. From his early years, he pursued a path that blended technical expertise with operational excellence, beginning with his graduation from the Defense Academy in 1975, where he specialized in aero‑engineering. This foundation set the stage for a lifetime dedicated to aviation, national security, and organizational leadership.
His professional journey began in the Japan Air Self‑Defense Force (JASDF), where he quickly advanced through demanding roles as a fighter pilot. Over the years, he accumulated more than 4,000 flight hours, including extensive time in the F‑104 and F‑15. His assignments took him across major air bases—Naha, Nyutabaru, Chitose, and Hyakuri—where he served in squadron and flight group leadership positions. His education continued abroad as well, including training at the U.S. Air Command and Staff College and later at the Combined Force Air Component Commander program, reflecting his growing strategic responsibilities.
Iwasaki’s ascent through the ranks was marked by consistent recognition of his leadership capabilities. He became a Major General in 2000, then a Lieutenant General in 2008, and ultimately reached the rank of full General in 2010. In these senior roles, he commanded major air defense organizations, including the Western Air Command and the Air Defense Command, before becoming Chief of the Air Staff Office. His appointment in 2012 as Chief of Staff of the Joint Staff Office placed him at the pinnacle of Japan’s uniformed military leadership, responsible for coordinating joint operations and advising national defense strategy.
Following his uniformed service, Iwasaki transitioned into advisory and leadership roles that extended his influence beyond the military. He served as Senior Advisor to the Defense Minister and later to the Cabinet, contributing his expertise to national policy and crisis management. His post‑service career expanded into the private and nonprofit sectors, including senior advisory roles at ANA Holdings and leadership positions in organizations dedicated to security, crisis management, cyber defense, and veteran affairs.
In recognition of his decades of service and contributions to Japan’s security, Shigeru Iwasaki received the First Class Order of the Sacred Treasure in 2023. Today, he continues to shape Japan’s defense and security landscape through his work with multiple organizations, offering guidance informed by a lifetime of operational experience, strategic insight, and unwavering commitment to public service.
